Peat Resortoration


Lowry Building & Civil Engineering completed major peat restoration during Dungonnell CABB works for Northern Ireland Water by installing various dam types to successfully increase the hydrological effectiveness of the peat lands, restoring one of the best examples of blanket bog in Northern Ireland, re-establishing the invaluable habitat to rare, endangered species and reinstating the ability to trap and store carbon. This was also in aid of improving water quality into the Dungonnell Reservoir and requiring expensive treatment by to maintain water quality to the public supply.

The catchment area around Dungonnell Service Reservoir, located in the Garron Plateau, Co. Antrim is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protected Area (SPA) and Area of Scientific Interest (ASSI) as well as a Ramsar Site (wetland of international importance).

The project was completed over two phases to avoid bird breeding season, ensuring no disturbance was caused.

We were extremely proud for this project to be named Green Champion 2019 in the Building & Construction sector at Green Apple Environment Awards in House of Commons, Westminster for improving water quality, absorbing carbon and improving wildlife habitats.

Revetment Replacement works

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd were appointed under the CPD Civil Engineering Framework to complete Revetment Replacement works on the River Lagan.

The complex project was completed in several phases and the works included:

  • Sheet piling inserted to the toe of the existing bank on the south side of the river Lagan
  • Excavation of the existing embankment.
  • Insertion of concrete toe (below water level)
  • Re-construction of embankment and insertion of new drainage outlets
  • Whinstone laid on concrete bed half way up the new embankment
  • Top half of the embankment top soiled and planted with a wildflower seed mix
  • Re-instatement of pedestrian guardrail and concrete plinth.

City Life Centre

The City Life Centre is located at the lower end of the Shankill and Falls communities of West Belfast. It is an important facility because it serves to actively and effectively bring people together through various community programmes and activities.

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd were appointed under the CPD Civil Engineering Framework to develop a new soft play area in the Centre grounds and which caters for children up to the age of 12 years old. The scheme involved site clearance, installing new drainage and laying over 400 sq. m of Wet Pour Safety Surfacing in mixed colours including blue and teal. A variety of children’s play equipment was subsequently fitted including a Playhouse, Sandpit, Climbing Tower, Net Balance Bridge, Log Walk & Mounded Tunnel. The play area also features raised planters with seating areas for parents and is enclosed with a bespoke steel perimeter fence.

Lagan Bridge

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering Ltd were appointed under the CPD Civil Engineering Framework to complete Public Realm works to the area adjacent to the Lagan Weir Footbridge and surrounding the iconic ‘Big Fish’ sculpture.

The works involved the removal of all the old bitmac surfacing and the installation of new mixed size natural stone granite paving slabs which were being laid to replicate public realm works recently undertaken in the immediate area. Other key works included laying new electrical cabling for feature lighting and installing a variety of light fittings such as those used to illuminate the Big Fish sculpture at night.

We also provided street furniture such as seating and bicycle stands to further enhance the site for tourists and visitors.
